How often can I expect to be focused, and how often can I expect peels? Basically, is there an experienced team playerbase or just hella DPS solo-dolos? How long will I need to grind raids to be able to survive in a world of fully-geared players?

Focused always and peeled never, in a pug at least. Even in a lot of premades you will find that tunnel vision characterizes a lot of players. Best bet is finding someone you know has your back and queuing with them. I think since the xp event has started there are more poorly geared players queuing on both sides but you def want to be in at least dungeon blues if you are going to be queuing regularly.

Optionally use stuff like bubble, cleanse and blessing of sacrifice
