"Mage's Wand" Quest solo guide

Thought I'd post this short guide here to help out other mages.

The quest to get your Mage wand can be soloed at level 44 rather easily, if you're having trouble finding a group for SM Lib. I would highly recommend that you do it, because the wand you get will last you all the way to 60, granting +9 spell damage to your choice of element. (Fire, Frost, or Arcane)

It starts with "Journey to the Marsh", which requires level 30, and IIRC is given by all mage trainers.

This is just a breadcrumb quest to send you to to Tabetha, in Dustwallow Marsh. Once you get there, she'll send you over to Shimmering Flats, where you'll do a couple of very short quests. (just talking to a couple NPCs at the racetrack)

After these, you'll be heading to SM Lib, to get a quest item. It's located at the beginning of the final hallway, in a bookshelf. Lootable object, takes 5 seconds to loot, etc.

Now, you'll want to be at least level 44, and Frost spec. Level 44 so that everything in the instance will be grey-level to you (and thus, aggro at much shorter distances) and Frost so that you can kite things and not get destroyed by melee damage. The extra survivability of slows and Ice Barrier is pretty much mandatory.

The actual instance itself is not too difficult. Almost all of the pulls are just 2 mobs, so you just sheep one and kill the other. Simple enough. You don't have to kill EVERYthing, as there are some mobs you can just walk past, but if you want to be safe, you can go ahead and kill all of the 2-mob pulls.

Beware of the "Scarlet Monk" mobs, however. They hit VERY hard (like 200-300 damage per hit on cloth) and also have an interrupt that class-locks for 6 seconds, so you will want to keep these guys at range no matter what, since even your Ice Barrier will only withstand 2 hits before breaking.

As you enter the instance, the first two mobs are in front of you. Easy enough; sheep one and kill the other. Same thing with the next couple of packs, just sheep one and kill the other. Watch out for the single patrolling mob; kill it when it is far enough away from other mobs to not aggro them.

The two at the end of the first hallway, you do not have to kill. You also don't have to kill the patrolling hound and humanoid; you can just pass by them when they walk away. Head around the right edge of the courtyard, and kill the single mobs along the way. You also do not have to kill the mob that is standing on the left of the door to the next hallway; if you hug the wall you can get through the door without aggroing him.

Next hallway, same stuff. Sheep one, kill one, then kill the sheep. I cleared the whole hall, just to be safe.

Once you get to the hallway with all the casters, again, you don't have to kill all of them, just enough of them to clear a path. It's recommended that you Counterspell or LoS them, to pull them back into the previous hallway. You don't have to kill the two at the end of the hallway; you can get through the doorway without aggroing them.

The next two halls are a bit tricky, seeing as you need to avoid aggroing the packs that are on the left and right. Sheep the monk and kill the caster first, then when you get to the 2nd room, there will be a caster and monk on the left side, kill them both. From here, get up close to the lamp on the left side near the door, and move just enough to the right of it that you can jump up onto the little ledge, then go through the door from there.

Finally, there will be a Monk and caster on the left, in the corner. Wait for the patrolling Monk to head back towards the end of the instance, then sheep the monk and kill the caster, then look at the bookshelf; the book you need to loot will be near the middle of it.

Here's the location of the book: http://i.imgur.com/YAo0rRV.jpg

From there, just hearth the fuck out and head back to Tabetha to claim your spell damage wand.

Oh, and don't even try to solo Doan. He's immune to slows and snares and will just bitch-slap you to death with his staff.
