Hunter Questions About Learning New Pet Skills

Hello,
I'm currently leveling a hunter and I have to admit that I am a little confused by how new abilities are learned for pets. I understand that certain animals have certain abilities and must be tamed and played with to learn them. Here's my question:

If I wanted my cat that currently has no skills to eventually have Dash 3, do I have to tame 3 cats with Dash 1, Dash 2, and then Dash 3. Or can I learn all 3 tiers of Dash from just 1 cat with Dash 3?

So I got a new cat and tested it. You can skip all the lower tiers of an ability. Question answered.
